The end of the year proved to be a very successful time for the North Canterbury Woodcraft Club - a group of keen wood turners based at the Northbrook Studios in Northbrook Road. We had an active stand at the A & P Show with a display of member’s work plus small spinning tops were being turned all day for children to take as souvenirs. We were a very popular attraction for both young and old and roughly 100 tops were given away.
On Wednesday afternoon Club days, we always have a keen group of teenagers from Home School groups who come down to turn. One of the very special things about this group is the way they share what they are doing and help each other out with ideas and solutions to turning problems. This is what our club has always worked on - members helping members, although it is great to have two very experienced tutors, Noel and Merv sharing their vast knowledge and years of experience to ensure the students and club members take away something to be proud of.
We were very grateful to a local who was felling an 80 year old Ash not too far from the Clubrooms. He called in and offered the club the trunk in two large pieces. These were gratefully received and will be great to turn in the future - wood takes a long time to dry out! If you are felling any trees - NZ natives, fruit trees, basically anything but pine or willow and more than 300mm in diameter, we would be interested in any surplus suitable for turning. It would be great if you could contact the club first to ensure the tree is cut in the best way to ensure as much salvageable wood as possible. We could even come and cut it down and remove it for you if it is not too difficult or dangerous to do so. Contact details below.
We now have a great promotional video that showcases members and what wood turning means to them. Check out the video to see what we get up to here;
