A new recreational option could soon be coming to Rangiora, with a proposal to install a 9-hole disc golf course near MainPower Stadium receiving support from council staff.

The plan, put forward by the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust, would see a free-to-use course set up across currently underused green space between the stadium, hockey turf, and cricket oval. Designed as a temporary and flexible installation, the course could be moved or adjusted over time while the area’s long-term use is still being considered.

Importantly, the project would come at no cost to ratepayers. The Trust plans to fund the installation through sponsorship and would also cover any maintenance, relocation, or removal if needed.

Potential conflicts with existing users, particularly cricket, have been considered. Some holes may be temporarily closed during games, and the course layout has been designed to minimise interference. Because the setup is not permanent, any issues that arise can be addressed quickly.

Council staff recommended approving the proposal, noting it would activate an underutilised space, encourage community wellbeing, and expand local recreation options with minimal risk.

If approved, the course would initially operate under a three-year licence, allowing time to assess its popularity and long-term fit within the area.
